Infection

"Hey, I found a great area full of Aromatic Grass! Wanna go?"

Infection is merely the beginning of the saga, and the volume where you first meet the little Wavemaster.
After taking wind about this mysterious illegally edited cat PC, Kite wanders off into the far back alley of Mac Anu. Elk walks up happily to Mia, telling her about this new area he found. Mia agrees to go, but then she sences something.
"Uh - Mia?"
Mia runs up to Kite, calling out for him. Elk runs to catch up to her, tripping along the way. Mia grabs Kite's hand, mentioning how nice his bracelet is.
"Bracelet? What're you talking about? I don't see any bracelet, Mia."
Mia smirks and begins to walk off, saying how they might meet again sometime. She turns and continues for good. Elk walks just a few steps ahead, but turns around to look at Kite once more. A moment after, he remembers.
"Wait, Mia! What about the Aromatic Grass?"

Later on, Mia mails you and tells you to meet up with her at the bottom of a dungeon. After running through it and defeating the Data Bug at the bottom, you finally get both Mia and Elk's member addresses. Before heading back to Mac Anu, Elk stares at you a little more, then gates out to catch up with Mia.
Back in town, Mia decides she'll teach you a nifty new process: Gate Hacking! So, the hacking's done, you're at the area, and you must defeat yet another Data Bug. After seeing the power of the bracelet, Mia seems rather thrilled, but Elk on the otherhand... doesn't look too happy. Hmm... wonder what's up with him.

A little later in the game, you'll run into Elk in Mac Anu. He seems a bit frantic about something.
"I think there might be a Data Bug in our favorite area!"
Kite agrees to help him out. After all, Elk's his new friend, right? They warp into the area, but... odd... it doesn't seem to be corrupted. After an awkward moment of silence, Elk confesses that the area didn't have a Data Bug at all; he just needed a reason to bring Kite here to ask him for the bracelet. Elk claims that Mia's not paying attention to him anymore, not after she found out about Kite and his new gadget. Suddenly, the screen flickers. Seems as if Elk's little lie became the truth. Well, since there is a Data Bug here after all, might as well go off and whack at it. With only Elk at his side, Kite goes off to the dungeon to defeat the nuinsance that's there.
Upon reaching the final room, there's -
"Mia!"
Coincidentally enough, Mia was there slicing away at the Data Bug already. Mia called out Elk, which surprised him quite a bit. She didn't call for Kite, oh no, she called out for him. Since there was no time to be wasted on a short, out-of-character happy-dance, Elk and Kite ran into battle to aid the feline.
So after the battle fought and the Data Bug gone, Elk returns to being his happy self, but their favorite area is destroyed. Mia says it's okay, that with the thousands of possible fields out there, they're sure to find a new area for themselves. Well, Elk's happy anyway, and they both return to town.

That's all for Elk's role in the games, but from then on, you can invite Elk into your party any time you wish.
